Heroes Con, Day Three and beyond

The third day at Heroes Con went very much like the first two -- lots of nice people, lots of signing, handshaking, chatting, and so forth. I did more head sketches, and sold more prints... and I got a couple of presents from fans.

One such gift was a really cool -- and large -- drawing by a young man named (if memory serves) Ryan Miller, who came by our tables to meet us and talk Turtles. The piece of art he gave me is quite nice, as you can see in this photo of me and Ryan. He's holding a color head sketch that Eric Talbot and I did together, and which I gave to him in a sort of trade for his drawing. I think this guy has talent.

We left the show a little early, around 3, as we were anxious to get on the road for the long drive back home... and the next day, around 6PM, we were back in Northampton. Jim and Eric were great traveling companions, and I thank them heartily for agreeing to drive with me down to Charlotte.

I don't know if I'll go back to Heroes Con -- not because it wasn't a good show for me (it was), or that I didn't like the people (I did), but these long road trips are starting to get to me more than they used to. I'm thinking I probably won't do any shows or store signings unless I can comfortably drive to them in one day. Maybe I'll figure out a way to fly again, or take trains... I don't know. I guess the older I get, the more of a homebody I am. -- PL

  1. Glad to hear it went well Pete! You gotta have at least one more in you! San Diego '09 + TMNT 25th Anniversary = Massive fun and huge exposure for the Turtles!

  2. Yeah, at LEAST try Comic-con, though it is HUGE and easy to get lost in. But the 25th Anniversary would be perfect!

I'm only two hours away from San Diego, but this year, as I'm staying over, I plan on taking the train. I hope you do make the trip to the West Coast, it would be cool to meet you.

  3. I don't blame you for avoiding air planes... i don't like 'em. The hubby drags me all over the country making me sit in one of those tubes going 500mph with nothing under it. Yuk!

Amtrak is fun but they never run on time.

  4. I hope you don't give up on traveling; there's too many wonderful things to see in this world to restrict yourself to just one small part of it.

Last year I had to make the 10-hour trek home from Comic-Con on Sunday with enough time to spare to pack and be on a plane to Chicago at 10am the next morning. Ugh, that sucked. But there is a unique serenity that comes with driving through California at night and Chicago has fantastic pizza. :)

  5. As fun as traveling around the West Coast was last year, I think taking the bus from Northampton to New York was great fun. Normally I hate buses (having had to catch them every day of my school life) but the country through MA is just fantastic and so different from anything I've traveled through here in Australia that I totally lost track of how long the trip was. Really chilled too, which was great!
Love to go through some of the towns in MA on a bike one day!

  6. San Diego next year for the 25th anniversary would be a great idea... I'm already likely to be there for Usagi's 25th as well, so it would be a superb double celebration :)

Plus if Kevin is doing this year then I would like to finally also meet you Peter after all this time..!

  8. Peter,

while I can understand your thoughts on this, I am only 27 but I too am a homebody the more and more I age, but it is to note that the TMNT should be a con-presence at major conventions, (Heroes, SanD, NY, etc) every year, or at least NY-con, Heroes Con, as you seemed to have this last year. Now, I am prolly very wrong without all the facts, but I usually don't hear of anyone representing the TMNT/mirage camp (comic wise)overall collectively at the big cons in the past years, which is a shame cos while Volume 4 was on hiatus, you had a great Tales of the TMNT book hitting stands, a movie coming out, etc. Now, I may of overstepped my bounds as I am only using what little info I have in terms of memory, but I don't recall Lawson or a few other writers, artists for Tales or other mirage folks being at the big cons representing the TMNT collectively... and I am also not taking in the fact that everyone at mirage has respective families, it costs money to get people to cons, etc. but if you do decide to reside in a one-day travel plan, i hope you can at least keep the overall mirage presence available at other cons.

Also, if this is your last year or so, may I suggest flying down to MegaCon '09 in Orlando florida? the weather is not only nice, but your old friend Stan Sakai seems to be making it a new yearly-visit. And what is the chance you may be heading down to Mid-Ohio con one more time? (I am from Columbus, Ohio! where I have heard stories of you, Kevin, Stan, and a few other Mirage boys have some fun times, but why not been back in a while?)

  9. Wow, that was a cool trade. I can sympathize with the homebody thing on one hand, but on the other hand, having been attending Comic-Con for more than 15 years without seeing any real TMNT/Mirage presence, I have to say that it doesn't feel right. The Turtles as as big as any comic property (bigger than most, really) and they deserve to be represented at the foremost show for such things. Hopefully you'll consider it!

  10. Well, the four Turtles prints from Heroes Con have reached eBay. Have you thought about offering them on the Web site? I think everyone here who's interested in them would prefer to support Mirage directly. :/

I second this. I would rather pay my money directly to Mirage than to someone called "The ComicMonster".

  12. I fourth that. ComicMonster, for example, is a well known con attendee that grabs lots of stuff to resell on eBay...

  13. Hey, Peter. Thanks for being there in Charlotte and I really do hope you'll come again to Heroes sometime later on. I'm glad to have finally met you and the guys after all these years, and I was very excited! ^^

I was the guy you critiqued my artwork, had my graphic novels and important comics signed, and wore the TMNT movie hat from Saturday's Heroes Con. I was also the one coming back and forth to your booths and watching Mike and Jim draw, and looking at Mike's posters (I was being choosy what poster to buy before the con ends - they were very nice). lol

You gave me some good insight and advice about the drawing business though, and I'm definitely going to keep trying my drawing and inking skills to further improve myself. Once again, thank you for coming, and I'm really looking for the new comics and the new season of the Fox TMNT show....or anything new that's TMNT related like another TMNT animated movie. ;)

Keep up the great work, you guys. ^^
