Donatello in his element

This is one of my favorite drawings of my favorite Turtle. I drew this, "cyberinked" it, and colored it in Photoshop for inclusion in a portfolio of prints that Mirage Studios published years ago. If I remember correctly, the portfolio included work by Kevin Eastman, Michael Dooney, Steve Lavigne, Dan Berger, Ryan Brown, Jim Lawson, and Eric Talbot.

It's kind of funny to look at today. I like drawing complex Kirby-esque machinery, and I think this is one of my more successful ventures into that area. But if I were to draw this today, I bet all of those computer screens would be flat LCD panels, which have become very common. Back when I drew this piece, all we had were those bulky old CRTs! -- PL

  1. Kevin wasn't in that portfolio, but A.C. Farley and Mark Martin were. :)

  2. I have that portfolio! If memory serves there's a live action picture of you in one of the screens.

  5. Heh, LCD screen's aren't as visual as Tube TV's. Probably why one reason the Technodrome has 50's style levers and buttons and switches over the place instead of just keyboards and mice or joysticks.. ;)..

  8. It was actually this piece - which I saw before I really started reading the early comics drawn by you and Eastman - that made me start to look up to you as an artist as well as a writer. The insane detail and Donny's concentration just really struck a chord with me.

  9. Great pic - could be Page 1 for a TMNT/Matrix crossover!

Interesting to know what Kirby would've made of all our tech getting smaller and sleeker. Bigger, bulkier, and crazier was definitely the way Kirby's tech was evolving...

Thanks! I feel this is one of my most successful drawings, both for the way the machines fit together, and for the pose and expression on Don. It's sometimes very difficult to get a character to look exactly the way you want him to, but I think I managed to do that with this drawing. -- PL

From what I know of Jack Kirby, he probably would have loved it! He was always looking forward. -- PL

  12. I see a picture of Pete at his desk drawing. Art does imitate life.
